Reducing eye injury at work

We recommend the three step approach as outlined in the Australian Standards (1336-1997) to drastically reduce eye injuries in the workplace:

    1. Eliminate possible eye hazards
    1. Control potential hazards and
    1. Wear correct eye protection.

To reduce eye injury hazards in your workplace:

    1. Isolate hazardous operations
    1. Ensure there are suitable screens or guards to shield from flying fragments, particles or radiation.
    1. Provide water sprays for dampening down dusty areas
    1. Reduce dust being raised by air turbulence with windbreaks
    1. Use catchments, splash guards and baffles to confine dangerous liquids
    1. Extract dust, gases or fumes with exhaust hoods or booths

General workplace eye safety tips:

    1. Make sure the type of eye protection selected is appropriate for the task
    1. Display safety signs and notices in work areas where eye protection is needed
    1. Review workplace eye safety procedures regularly to ensure they remain up to date an appropriate for workplace safety
    1. Ensure that normal spectacles are not used as a replacement for proper protective eyewear
